  • Tom Horne is “obsessed”

“My obsession in 2024 is to get conservatives elected to our school boards.”

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne doesn’t mince words when he says he is “obsessed’ with electing as many conservatives as possible to the state’s school boards, which serve over 400 school districts. There are roughly 1,200 elected school board members in Arizona and Horne wants this group dominated by hard-core right-wing conservatives. Horne made his comment in September, 2023 at a state meeting of Moms for Liberty, which the Southern Poverty Law Center categorizes as an “extremist group” which has advocated book bans and opposes racially inclusive education and LGBTQ+ issues.

Dear Leader Says We Should Hate Everyone Not Like Us

Public education in America began before the “Founding Fathers” met in Philadelphia. Horace Mann of Massachusetts campaigned in town after town for publicly financed education for all children in “common schools.” He believed public education is vital to the success of democracy. For democracy-hating Republicans, that’s the rub: they believe education should be exclusively for hetero “Christian” whites. Making all schools private is a way to deny knowledge to everyone else.
